Do you know what's growing on your kitchen towel?

Ever wonder how much bacteria is growing on your kitchen towel? A new study suggests that it may be a lot, and that the amount increases with family size and frequency of meat consumption. Researchers cultured bacteria from 100 kitchen towels after one month of use to determine both the type and amount of bacterial growth. They found that 49% of the towels exhibited growth of bacteria normally found in or on the human body. "In this study, we investigated the potential role of kitchen towels in cross-contamination in the kitchen and various factors affecting the microbial profile and load of kitchen towels," said  Susheela D. Biranjia-Hurdoyal , senior lecturer of health sciences at the University of Mauritius and a lead author on the study presented Saturday at the annual meeting of the American Society for Microbiology . Of the 49 towels showing bacterial growth, almost three-quarters grew bacteria normally found in the intestines, such as E. coli   and Enteroco

Amazon said it has called on a supplier to clean up its act at a Chinese factory where a watchdog group says it observed harsh conditions and mistreatment of workers. Amazon said it had discovered "two issues of concern" at the Foxconn factory in Hengyang earlier this year. The concerns involved treatment of dispatch workers and overtime pay, Amazon spokesman Ty Rogers said. He did not respond to a request for further details. Amazon's admission comes after an investigation by the US-based watchdog group China Labor Watch, and  The Observer  — The Guardian's weekly newspaper — into worker conditions at the Hengyang factory, where Echo smart speakers and Kindle e-readers are made. A report about the investigation, which was carried out between August 2017 and April 2018,  published on China Labor Watch's website  Sunday. It alleges multiple violations of Chinese labor law at the factory. It also describes an environment where 60-hour workweeks are

Image
The Presidency on Sunday said President Muhammadu Buhari had not been in the good reckoning of a vocal section of the country’s elite because of his performance in office. The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, stated this in an opinion titled “June 12 tsunami and the ones who won’t forgive Buhari” made available to journalists in Abuja. Although Shehu did not mention names, former President Olusegun Obasanjo has been in the forefront of the anti-Buhari campaign, asking the President not to seek re-election over alleged non-performance. Only on Friday, Obasanjo claimed that the President was planning to move against him because of his anti-government stand. 7 Things The World Richest People Never Do

Image
Our habits tend to define who we are. If you make it a point to drive recklessly every day, nobody will be surprised when you eventually get into a traffic accident. This seems obvious to us. Yet the financial equivalent of this principle, tolerating bad monetary habits on a regular basis until you're driven into poverty, seems less obvious. For the most part, the richest people in the world didn't get to their position overnight. They didn't stumble into money, and it wasn't given to them as a gift. They accumulated it, and continue to maintain it, as a direct result of their daily habits and their underlying philosophies. These are seven things you'll never catch the world's richest people doing: 1. Playing the lottery.  The lottery comes with a bold promise: a chance to win more money than you'd ever know what to do with. But the odds of winning are astronomically low, and logically, you have a far better chance of creating your own wealth than gett
